A little inclement weather did not prevent the families of Davis Islands from having a great time at our EGGS-stra special event on Saturday. 

A few pictures say it all.

There have been reports to the City of Tampa that Golf Carts have been illegally driving on the multiuse path by Peter O. Knight Airport.  It is illegal to do so pursuant to Florida State Statute 316.1995: A person may not drive any vehicle other than by human power upon a bicycle path, sidewalk, or sidewalk area.

We want to keep our Paths open and safe for everyone.   Please get the word out to your friends and neighbors that Golf Carts are not to be driven on the path.  Tampa city police have been informed and may start handing our tickets if the carts continue to use the path illegally.

We know how important traffic safety concerns are to you and your Civic Association is working hard to improve pedestrian safety, address speeding and the paving condition of our streets and boulevards.

The new year will start with a traffic safety campaign. The campaign will focus on education and advocacy. Specifically, a petition drive will be directed to the City Administration to implement short and long term solutions for traffic calming across the islands.

We are also advocating for resurfacing improvements of our older roads. Priority would be on addressing segments where speeding is of greatest concern. Resurfacing would allow for implementation of new lane markers and stripes that could include dedicated turning lanes, bike lane, parking and other strategies where appropriate. These new stripe patterns have been proven to slow down traffic and allow for safer sharing of the road.

Members of the Traffic & Safety committee have met with key City representatives and will continue to do so over the next year to bring plans and solutions to our community. The good news is that the City administration is very much in support of safer streets for all city residents and has been working on this issue.

A Facebook page and links focusing on this issue, door to door and online petitions will be in the works thanks to our neighbors, Michael Martin, Andrew Ledford and TJ King. Look for more information on this initiative after the holidays.

This month we are featuring photos of three different “original” Davis Islands buildings,

the Palace of Florence, the Davis Islands Garage and the Casa del Sol Hotel, along with

three present-day images of those same buildings, or, in the case of the Casa del Sol,

what is there now.

The three original buildings featured here offer a look into the changes that have occurred

on the Islands over the past eighty years. The Palace has been recently restored, and it

serves basically the same purpose for which it was designed. The garage, while still

standing, does not share the same status as the Palace. The building has been all but

swallowed by the continued expansion of the hospital. The Casa del Sol is gone

completely, replaced by townhomes on its former site on Biscayne.
