Over the weekend, officers responded to Davis Islands following a report of a large group of nuisance bicyclists. Three bicyclists were taken into custody after they intentionally damaged the property of residents and our officers. We’d like to remind our community that these groups should not be confused with the many cyclists enjoying a leisure or athletic ride around the city. Many of the bicyclists in these groups have no regard for their safety or the safety of others, with some looking for an opportunity to commit a crime. If you happen to come across one of these groups, we encourage you to follow the three R’s: Recognize, Report, and Reroute. • Recognize- There is a difference between a group of cyclists who obey traffic laws and the ones who do not. Often traveling in larger groups, sometimes close to 100 people, these groups ride around with no regard for traffic laws. Many groups are mainly comprised of juveniles. • Report- Call the TPD Non-Emergency line at 813-231-6130 and report the location, the general direction of travel, and any clothing or bike descriptions. If the situation appears to be dangerous, call 911 and report the activity. • Reroute- Attempt to use an alternate route to your destination to avoid the cyclists causing the problem. Do not follow the bicyclists.Riding a bike, driving, and living in the city should be enjoyable for everyone. Disturbances and crimes committed by these large groups are being taken seriously. If you are a parent or guardian who has a juvenile who bikes unsupervised, we encourage you to talk with them and remind them of the responsibility bicyclists have on the road and the consequences of violating traffic laws by participating in these large groups who fail to obey traffic laws that are meant to keep everyone safe.
